Pet Panda

Painted for the upcoming Paint Spot Pet Painting Show in June, 2018 – I wanted to avoid cats and dogs which should be the primary animals people would paint for this show and also wanted to paint a person.  As I was painting a Chinese girl, obviously panda bears showed up.  And then all of the sudden, the Chinese common “福” upside down sign showed up, too.  I was always wondering why they do it.  So with this opportunity, I searched for the reason.  Apparently In Chinese, “happiness collapses” and “happiness comes” are the same pronunciation so by hanging it upside down, they hope to reverse the meaning.  Very interesting!
